www.barringtoncoffee.com: truly great coffee roasted to highlight its inherent quality

Abe's New York City Espresso Map

Postby Abe Carmeli on Wed Nov 11, 2009 8:33 pm

This grew out of constant requests I get from friends and acquaintances to recommend coffee shops in Manhattan. I finally decided to put them all on a map and send a link. The map covers Manhattan only, and is very subjective. To emphasize its subjectivity, I included my name in the title. Locals will notice some glaring omissions there, but those are intentional. I included only places I personally enjoy, and I set the bar not too high: namely, a place where you can get a decent shot. I will update the map as more shops open, and that seems to be happening a lot lately. Abe's New York City Espresso Map

Abe, that is neat! If we wanted our favorite shops on the map, regardless of where they are, could you add them? Then we could have a nationwide espresso map.

I'd rather not add any shops outside New York to the map at this stage. A national map already exists. Sadly, when it comes to New York, it is grossly outdated.

The omitted spots say: "Ouch, that REALLY hurts."

I've been working on putting together something similar - mostly to open on Google Maps from my phone to when I think I might be near a cafe, but I'll share once it's ready.

Mostly the downtown Manhattan map so far. When will you put on your safari helmet and go to Brooklyn? :P

Just a few days ago I was thinking how it is both the best and worst time to be a home barista in NYC. There is so much great coffee popping up all over the city (breaking rules such as "Below 20th St ONLY" and bringing some bean diversity given the number of guest espressos) and enough free cuppings to keep the interested geeks involved. But on the other hand, what if there is an amazing cafe on the way to (insert work, school, or errand)? What's the point of making the shot at home?

Oh wait, I almost forgot: most members of this forum are here for the adventure, and not for the easy way out!

I need to renew my passport first :P .

Outside Manhattan, Brooklyn indeed would be my 2nd choice, but, ahm, I'm trying to save the planet here and drink locally.

Thanks for the map and heads up on Ground Support. Escaped my attention entirely. Next day or two I hope to sign a contract on an apt just between GS and Gimme--both within 5 minutes. Life gets sweeter, but cafe options conspire against roasting on the fire escape.

That's a sweet spot. As to roasting on the fire escape, I've seen it done..and I've seen it catch fire too. Guilty on both.

Where in Grand Central is Joe's? Was in the "Rotten Apple" recently, arrive/depart GC and didn't know about Joe. With all the great coffee shops, maybe I should stop calling it the Rotten Apple.
