Or "why I can't keep up with them any more." This is a well thought-out list from Eater L.A. It does not include Orange County, eastern San Gabriel Valley or the San Fernando Valley. http://la.eater.com/archives/2013/10/17 ... l_2013.php

Good to see such a vibrant scene up in your parts Marshall. Heck even OC is getting in on the act of serious coffee - finally.
Geez, what next... good local beer? Yup, that's happening too (this being the day after the latest batch of Black Tuesday was released by The Bruery in Placentia). Is Southern CA getting clued in? Whether it's becoming aware of better quality, or just jumping on a trend, who cares. Long overdue.

I noticed something interesting from that list. Last year, Demitasse, which opened a second location in LA, bought a few of my grinders, the K30 Vario and the cool Malkonig Kenia that I refinished and painted. It looks nice on their bar.

And a new (and astute) list from L.A. Magazine begins:
I'd also like to call out to TomC for honoring my friend and teacher, Donald Schoenholt, in his tagline.
Full article and list here: http://www.lamag.com/bola/column/2013/0 ... eau-coffeeLed by a zealous crew of precision brewers, the latest trend in caffeine extraction has been dubbed "third wave" coffee (the first wave presumably being all those decades we spent drinking Folgers and the second being the era of Peet's and Starbucks). Chicago's Intelligentsia sparked the local boom in 2007, when it brought its high-end, single-origin ethos to L.A. Today there are dozens of new contenders that offer meticulously sourced, lightly roasted beans and cups brewed to order.

You're a fortunate man if you're one of his acolytes. The guy's a giant, but I don't need to tell you that.

If you have one shop to try--which would it be? I took my dad to UCLA medical center today and realistically only have time for one cafe after lunch.
I think I'll go to 'go get em tiger' unless I hear back that it sucks or there are better options
Thanks!!!

An earlier discussion of Kyle and Charles's approach: Up with sommeliers, down with artisans
