Where to pick up #2 porcelain filter holders?

Postby arced on Wed Nov 21, 2007 2:00 pm

Hello all,

I'm trying to track down a couple #2 porcelain filter holders (as I'm trying to replace the plastic version that are stained, and I'm also worried about the plastic leaching out). Anyway, Great Infusion typically carries them, but they're out at the moment and don't know when they'll be back in. Sweet Maria's only has the #1 and the #4. Can anyone help, I'm trying to pick them up for my parents.

Thanks.

http://www.fantes.com has two sizes of these.

The smaller one is really too small and a PITA to use even though they say to use #2 filters for it.

Don't mistype the URL; if you substitute an "a" for the last "e" you are going to get a porn site.

Thanks for the quick reply (and the caution about the url). I checked out the site and found the page:
http://fantes.com/coffeemakers_manualdrip.htm#glass
Did I miss something or is it the choice between the #1 size and the #4 size? I actually have the #1 at home and I agree that it's a bit harder to use, so that's why I was looking for the #2. The #4 is a bit too large. Anyway, I hope I missed it and there is the #2.

Thanks again for the reply.

You read the site correctly.

The #4 is not so huge that you couldn't use it for single cup brewing, although a #2 size would be better. I've used the smaller one once and will try it again. I found that it took at least twice as long to make a cup of coffee with that thing than with my old plastic Melita cone.

I'm curious - do you guys preheat the porcelain cones? I'm a big fan of my Melitta #2 cone and I've always wondered about the porcelain cones at Sweet Marias. Always figured they'd be a big heat sink for the water sitting in the cone.

I have used the cone one time, so far, so I don't have a regular procedure. You make a valid point, methinks.

Great Infusions, a site sponsor and donor to the holiday prizes, also carries them:

I seem to recall seeing them on Sweet Maria's at one point, as well.

That's something I never thought of. I guess that I'll have to try it. I tend to run boiling water through the filter in the holder to pre-wet it, so it gets a bit warm, but probably not warm enough.

Anybody know where to get #2? I find it odd that I can only find one place (Great Infusions, which unfortunately is on back order) that carries them. Maybe it's my own personal bais, but I was under the impression that the #2 filter was one of the most popular size (I actually believed that they were the most popular, at least in my household).

Is the #4 not that large? The Sweet Maria's site has a side-by-side comparison photo between the #1 and the #4, and the #4 looks huge...

Thanks again for all of the responses.

It's big but you could use it. I probably would rather use the #2 plastic Melita cheapie than bother with it.

It might be that the #1 porcelain filter they are selling is useful if you change the grind. I might have my small Vanellis grinder set too finely for drip, but I haven't had time to fool with it since I got the porcelain filters a few days ago. I don't make much drip coffee at home, making most of it when I'm on the road or visiting my parents where I tend to stay for about a week at a time. I'll try to test it tomorrow or during the weekend and if I find the filter is more useful than before I"ll post it here.

The really NICE porcelain filters I've seen, or at least the picture of nice porcelain filters, is of two that are unavailable in the USA as far as I can tell. They are made by Revol in France:

There are two sizes, and one could probably figure out which corresponds best with a #2.

In any event, I know nowhere in the USA or Canada that stocks these things, and some pretty extensive searching in Lyon France, one of the largest cities in France, did not result in find them. I'm pretty sure you could find them at the factory store in St. Uze France, but the cost of travelling there would probably not be worth it!

Thanks for the tips on the Revol. They look nice, but seem pretty unavailable in the US (unless I want to modify a ramekin...). I'm still surprised that no one knows of a place that sells #2. There has to be at least two retailers in the US that sell them, no? It's too bad that Great Infusions is sold out. Anybody else want to chime in?

Thanks again.
