Two Cheers for the Clever Dripper

Postby another_jim on Wed Feb 01, 2012 9:33 pm

The Clever is just about my favorite brewed coffee maker. You can grind coarse, steep for three and half to four minutes and get a clarified brew by letting the filter and valve do its work

... but ...

It's built from the what has to be the world's crappiest and seediest plastic. I've gone through two of them and am now on my third. On the first, the ball valve fell out when I dropped it on the floor. When I tried to replace it, the whole thing broke apart. The second turned into a Salvador Dali statue after a run in the dish washer. The plastic is so bad, the dripper needs to be treated as if it were made of paper thin ceramic or crystal.

My two cents: if they charge a few bucks more, make it out of something that would survive normal kitchen wear and tear, and that looks like something more desirable than discarded packaging; it would sell a whole lot better.

Mine looks a little crackly, but has survived criss crossing the country a bunch of times in my backpack when I had to fly to San Diego frequently.

CCD + Skerton (more recently Pharos) is a great way to travel....

Interesting. Timolino makes a dripper that is a lot like the clever, but not quite identical. Mine has held up through some abuse (I take it on trips pretty often) and never had issues. I wonder if it is better built or if I am just lucky. I also don't know how the taste compares. It makes a good cup and I've always assumed they are fairly similar, but I have never gotten to try them head to head (both are cheap enough that getting one of each isn't that crazy).

As an FYI, the original patent for the Clever is here: http://www.google.com/patents/about?id=t4UYAAAAEBAJ&dq=5826493

And yes, I too discovered it is not dishwasher friendly but it is capable of disassembly if one is careful. It does brew a nice cup of coffee.

Thanks for the tip on the Timolino. It appears to have a built in mesh filter, so it wouldn't work for clarified brews.

Another option is the Brewt, which has a handy hinged lid. It's a slightly different shape than the Clever, so you have to fold the edge of a #4 filter to get it to fit, but it will survive a dishwasher. It also has a small mesh screen (it's meant to brew loose leaf tea or coarse grind, French-Press style coffee), but it's removable.

The Timolino does have a mesh filter, but it pops out so you can use it with or without the filter.

My original is hanging in there. I have never dropped it or put it in the dishwasher though. I think mine continues because there is a back up unit just waiting in the closet. It does not want to be the Wally Pipp of coffee makers!

I have had two for a couple of years. I put them in the DW once a week or so. I haven't had any problems. Befor I put the filter in I press down on the valve to seat it. This prevents occasional dribbles. I like this brew method best (haven't tried vacpot or toddy).
