Mazzer Super Jolly on coarsest setting not anywhere near coarse enough for French press

Postby chrisl on Thu Jan 13, 2011 11:08 pm

So my Mazzer Super Jolly just came in the mail today. What a beast!

I've got a crappy espresso machine right now, so I'd like to use my not-so-crappy French press for now. The problem is on the coarsest setting, it isn't anywhere near coarse enough for French press. I moved it to the coarsest setting and here is what I got:

Now compare this to what ineedcoffee.com says:

Anyone run into this problem before?

Did you remove the limiter screw? See the slotted screw between 7 and 8 in the photo below:

It prevents the collar from moving too far; it's range is plenty wide for espresso, but (maybe) not for French press. Depending on whether you prefer slow or fast steep times, the French press setting is somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 turn from absolute zero (i.e., where the burrs touch, not necessarily where "0" is on the collar).

This is a rebranded Astoria. I have a screw between 5 and 6 and a screw hole with no screw in it between 0 and 1. It looks like I can't move it beyond 5 or so because the screw hits the edge of a groove. I'll try to remove it and see what happens, but I'm 99% sure that is the problem.

So I assume this is a safety thing? Too tight and it may damage the burrs, too loose and it may wobbly the burrs or something?

It prevents the collar from being spun suddenly if the burrs bind (e.g., due to a rock). It also restricts the grind setting in case an idiot is adjusting the grinder. Of course this doesn't apply to you, since you're knowingly going outside the espresso zone settings.

If the burrs bind, the collar won't move because of the mazzer floating carrier design. In any way, all other grinders should designed so that if the burrs bind and the grind adjustment pin fails, the burrs move away from each other.

Thanks Roeland for catching my memory lapse. For those following this thread, see Mazzer Mini Component Photos for great internal photos of the floating adjustment mechanism used on all their grinders.
