My suggestion would be to pick up the Breville for $160 from Bed, Bath & Beyond or one of their other retailers & try it out. Breville offers a 30 day return policy if you aren't happy & BB&B has a liberal return policy as do several other stores that sell the grinder.

I have to say at $160 this seems like a pretty solid option. I've got a BB&B local, so I wouldnt have to worry about shipping either.

The grinder burr mounting system allows the burrs to wobble, resulting in inconsistent grind.
The slow rotating, vertical burr design is compromised by excessive grind retention.
At espresso settings, large clumps of stale coffee drop out at random.
At press and drip settings, excessive fines result in a muddy cup.
A major disappointment as I loved the retro design.

Thanks for the clarification, this is exactly what I wanted to know.

I have never had an espresso centric grinder produce an acceptable grind for non espresso use and I have tried a lot of grinders. I went with a Bunn bulk grinder and it produces a much nicer cup. You will get some fines with any grinder, it is just the nature of the beast but the bulk grinder appears to minimize the effect and yields a much better cup. You may want to look over these two threads discussing bulk grinders.

Why do bulk grinders produce a superior grind for non espresso preparation?
