Intelligentsia House Blend Coffee to Water Ratio

Postby manhong on Fri Aug 12, 2011 11:58 am

I bought a bag of Intelligentsia House Blend coffee yesterday and I was wondering what is the ratio of coffee to water for this type of coffee for a French Press? Is it 7g coffee per 4 oz of water? The bag says 2 TBS coffee per 6 oz of water, but I'm not sure if that is accurate. How many grams is 2 TBS of coffee?

I have a gram scale and I'm willing to weight out my coffee and water prior to brewing. I also use a burr grinder to grind my coffee right before brewing as well.

The weight of 2 TBS of coffee will vary, I recently measured 10 grams for 2 level TBS of roasted, whole coffee and 11 grams for 2 TBS of roasted peaberry, but since you already have a gram scale, I suggest you do the measurement yourself with your coffee. 2 TBS is approximately 29.6 cc.

2 TBS per 6 oz water is roughly equivalent (if the 10 g / 2 TBS holds) to 10 grams per 177 ml water or a ratio of 177 / 10 = 17.7.

I usually start with 62.5 grams of whole bean coffee measured before grinding per liter of water and adjust to taste.

This is a ratio of 1000 / 62.5 = 16 which is a bit stronger then 17.7 times more water then coffee.

Thanks Chris. This is very helpful. I'll try it and adjust the coffee based on my taste
