Grinder for pourover - Vario, Manual or old Sunbeam?

Postby irrelevancy on Sun Jul 31, 2011 5:28 am

Hi all

Just wanting an opinion on a grinder for pourover/french press. I currently am using a Baratza vario, mainly for espresso, but also have a Hario Skerton and an old Sunbeam EM480 in the closet.

Now that I'm starting to drink more pourover, I'm trying to figure out how to grind the beans.

The Vario is OK, but I do feel that it gives too many fines...leading the pourover to choke towards the end.

The Skerton is OK for espresso, but the wobbly inner burr makes me wonder whether i'll end up getting an very inconsistent grind as well, especially at coarse settings.
I haven't tried the Sunbeam for pourover.

The alternative is for me to just buy a Baratza Virtuoso.

Has anyone who has used any of these grinders have any recommendations?

Thanks

For just filter, I've heard better things about the Maestro Plus than the Virtuoso. See here.
