Thanks for checking, that's the old part number which I was hoping wouldn't change.

Everyone over on the Reddit coffee group is pretty upset. I can't believe Hario would do something so stupid without at least addressing it. There's 10,000 Hario recipes out in the wild that are now obsolete. How many people out there are going to be adjusting grind trying to match draw-down time based on a recipe tuned for the old filters?

Why not contact Hario and ask them WTF is going on? The more of us that do; the more likely the issue will be properly addressed, methinks. https://www.hario.co.jp/en/contact/

Is that true? Some of the posts indicate that, while the filters are different and require a coarser grind and some adjustments in technique, they're actually getting better results in the cup.

I agree that Hario should at least publicly inform folks if they are changing a product that has the same catalog number to a different type of product. But this is also a company that seems to know coffee - maybe some faith and a little trial-and-error, and the change will actually be worth it. Who knows.

A couple people emailed Hario Japan, and this is what they had to say about the filter issue.
Dear [person]

This is Mishio Nakajima from HARIO in Japan.
Thank you for your inquiry.

I believe you have purchased the one from our unofficial seller since this version is sold only in Japan at this moment.
Actually if you buy from our official page at Amazon.com, you should receive the original one.
Please refer to the attachment to find which seller you should choose.

Or, you might want to visit the below web shop.
https://prima-coffee.com/search?page=1&query=hario

If you have any question, please feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,
Mishio Nakajima (Ms.)
International Department
Thank you for the inquiry. This is Manami from International sales.

I think you are saying about VCF-02-100W-H, not 100M (Is the filter white color?)

VCF-02-100W and VCF-02-100W-H are coming from different suppliers.
We used to work with just one supplier. However, as the demands of paper filter increased greatly worldwide, we had no choice but finding other suppliers. Both filters are recognized by our QC team. You might feel that VCF-02-100W is slightly thicker, but the extraction speed and the taste are considered to be the same level according to our QC test.

Thank you so much for using our products and we appreciate your kind understanding.

Best Regards,

Manami KASATANI

So there's some confusion. The first response is in agreement with the Japanese website. The second response gives two different part numbers, which is perfectly fine. Both do not address the issue of one kind of filter (the tabbed one that is NOT embossed with "V60") showing up in packaging for, and part number of, the original filter. (AFAIK, the tabbed one embossed with V60 is the one made in the Netherlands, which has yet another different part number.)

I am waiting for a response - I emailed, got a response asking for more information, sent more information (link to this thread, etc.), but haven't received a response back. The person who responded to me seems to be fairly high up, though, as he is responsible for a number of countries - Canada, Korea, Singapore ...

I am kind of tempted to stock up, but I am waiting to hear back first.

I recently purchased a big stockpile from Prima and can confirm they are the original filters.

FWIW, the only folks I've heard of (including me) who've had this issue purchased from resellers on Amazon.

My extraction time jumping from 2 minutes 30 seconds to over 4 minutes says otherwise.

Geeze, maybe we'll finally get some action on this, what a mess.

But boiling water is always at 100 C? Hmm.
