You can also try using FP alternative way - leaving the plunger above the coffee (instead of pressing it to the bottom) and pouring the coffee from the FP through the plunger. You get considerably less fines that way, at the expense of lower quantity of the coffeeweebit_nutty wrote:But at this point I'm actually very interested to try a steel filter brewing.. Seems they provide a good balance between clarity and body. There are quite a few options in that category, including that cool Duo brewer that Dan shared. But I'll probably break out that discussion into a different topic.

Actually, by doing it different ways and combining them, you can get all possible combinations of immersion and pourover methods.
However, problem with this one is that it's hard to avoid some grounds falling into the coffee

I brewed press coffee today with a paper filter. No sludge at all. A very nice, tasty cup of coffee but the mouthfeel was a little different.
Hope you didn't burn yourself, I stuck half of a melitta #4 between my mesh & base, volcano of hot coffee shot up upon plunging. Burned my left arm and both hands haha.

Here you go: How to Get Crystal Clear Coffee-Without Filter Paper!
Please note that I have not tried this, and will not be trying it - and "agar agar" sounds suspiciously like "xanthan gum" to me .

The thing is, weebit_nutty isn't trying to avoid paper. He doesn't want crystal clear coffee, just no sludge at the bottom.
He wants a certain style of haircut and you're proposing a guillotine.

What tha heck! lol that's a full fledge science project. It looks very unappetizing too and the end result reminds me a bit of that egg coffee I posted a while back.
(BTW, my sincere apology for deleting your smiley from the quote. Apparently HB has an insanely strict limitation of 3 smilies per post, and my reaction called for not two, but three shock smilies. )
