Which Grinder? Baratza Vario or Mazzer Mini Electronic

Postby Socalsteve on Mon Jan 10, 2011 4:08 pm

So, I narrowed it down to the Alex Duetto II as I do make milk drinks and don't think I'd be happy with the Quick Mill Alexia that I thought of at first.

I went to go look at the Vario at a local coffee house and wasnt impressed by the fit or finish of it. It just looked plasticy and not well built. Sitting next to it was a Mazzer Mini Electronic A...There is absolutely NO comparison between the 2 grinders. The Mazzer looked like it would make it through WW III and come out shiny...

But then, the price. Pretty much double the price. Is it worth it? Are the grinds so much better? Or, just the construction and durability?

As always, thank you in advance,

Steve

For whatever its worth the comparative reviews have tended to favor the Vario in terms of grinding and things like grounds retention. The Vario probably hasn't been out there long enough to evaluate long term. I have had good luck with mine.

Some hints:

The Vario as been tested and compared to many grinders. See Baratza Vario Grinder - Second Look, particularly this post: Baratza Vario Grinder - Second Look

"The twin Elektra Test or Can it Beat the Compak WBC?"
another_jim wrote:Our plan was to do 4 pairs against the Compak, with 2 pairs of each coffee, and 8 pairs with the Mini, with 4 pairs for each coffee.

But the Vario spanked the Mini three times in a row on the Black Cat, and edged it three times in a row on the Bonko. The Vario tasted silky and buttery, while the Mini tasted angular and edgy. On one Bonko shot, we thought the edgy flavor on the Mini was slightly better, but the mouthfeel edge of the Vario was too much. That was on the final shot, and we knew by then which grinder was which.

So we promoted the Vario to the Titan league, and did six shots against the Compak. Here we had two slight slight wins by the Compak, two by the Vario and two ties. We never could tell which grinder was which. On this day, the Vario played in the Titan league and won.

Recognizing that the Mini-E is a different beast than the Mini, the Vario still plays in the Titan league and should produce a grind comparable to those grinders (Cimbali Max, Robur, Kony, etc.) (search for the Titan Grinder Project for more details).

Maybe someone else can say how the Mini-E fits in/out of this league.

Of course, the Vario durability still needs to be proven...

The mini-E has 64mm burrs, so I would think it is of similar grind quality to a SJ.

There was a comparison a while ago at CG which compared the SJ to a Vario, and I remember it as a draw.

I owned both a SJ and a Major for a short time, and they are built like tanks, and will probabaly last forever, but I went with the Vario for the smaller form factor, and I thought it was more user friendly.

A doserless Mini E would probably also be user friendly (I didn't like the doser), but given the price difference I would pick the Vario (well, I did pick the Vario :) )

So, in the end, I bought a Vario. For a few reasons. Easier to use, tested better, easier to adjust and the biggest kicker is the Mazzer Mini Electronic isn't available for another 4 months...

Sold out across the country.

So, hopefully it all works out for the best.

Thanks all for your thoughts, links, opinions and experience.

Having owned a Mini, SJ, and M4D and now a Vario I'd pick them in this order - Vario, M4D, SJ, Mini. Vario gives all of the benefits of the M4D but has slightly better grind quality though is a bit slower.

My Vario has been flawless, though if the ProM were available I might have sprung the extra $$ for it. I miss the 7 second grind for a double the M4D took versus the Vario's 12.4. Still, I believe the Vario is hard to beat for the out the door price of $400.

I asked a similar question to an "espresso head" I really trust, he recommended waiting to find a used Mazzer Super Jolly. His advice was to wait, buy it used for less than the mini, new burrs and then dial it in...
