The Expobar is a capable machine, but the question you are asking is one that begs for a somewhat subjective answer. I would say they are in a similar league, but there are differences:
VBM has:
- heavier E-61 group (they hold the original patent for the E-61) *1
- dual gauges for boiler temp and brew water pressure
- larger case for better air circulation for electronics and easier to work on internally
- Commercial components (OPV & pressurestat in particular)
EXPOBAR:
- Smaller footprint
- Weighs less by 8 pounds (or 15 depending on the specs you use)
- Costs less ($1300 vs. $1800, in the US, anyway)
- Lower power (heating element?) 1428 vs. 1600 watts
*1 - I like the socket-head screws in the VBM top cap that makes removal of it a simple matter.
