Vibiemme Domobar DB Junior with a PID vs. a HX

Postby ramron67 on Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:04 pm

I have been contemplating an upgrade from my Silvia, with a PID, for quite a while.

Overall I typically make < 4 cups a day, the majority of which are milk-based drinks.

I am looking for a little more steaming power for milk-based drinks, and would like the ability to steam and pour shots at the same time. I do occasionally need to make coffee for several people at a time, so relatively quick recovery of steam power would also be important.

I have tried to do my research on this site, and based on my price point(Lets say <$1700), I am deciding between buying a Vibiemme Domobar Jr Double Boiler with the PID, or a nice heat exchanger machine (I have my eye on the Andreja premium).

As far as I can see it, the advantages of the Domo Jr. would be the temperature stability of the PID and the ability to adjust the brew temperature more precisely. I have gotten used to this with my Silvia.

I PM'ed a user who recently purchased a Domo Jr with a PID, and he thought that the Domo Jr's steam boiler was too small to steam more than one drink in a row.

The Andreja would likely have more steam power and would probably recover more quickly between drinks on those days when I need to make several drinks in a row.

I have never had a heat exchanger machine, so I am a bit intimidated by the need to flush to get the correct brew temperature, but I don't want to rule out this option due to ignorance and unfamiliarity.

Based on my needs, can anyone offer advice / additional pros and cons?

Thanks!

Stefano's Espresso Care has the Vibiemme Domobar Super HX for $1799 with free shipping, only a little more than your $1700 ceiling. [11-07-01]

Many years ago, I opted for the Domobar over the Andreja and have no regrets.

You can PID any HX for HX Heaven or 1½ Boiler

With Eric's adapter, brew temp management on an HX is a doddle.
Water usage is not all that much more on the Domobar.

In that price range, at least for my taste, I'd want a plumb-in option. As much as I love my HX and can pull great shots from it, after five years I'm pretty tired of emptying the drip tray or running out of water when pulling for parties.

One additional possibility would be something semi-used, such as

Buyer's Remorse - original version of Vivaldi II, with cup guard
Regular Price: $2,195.00
Used Price: $1,800.00

showing on the Chris' Coffee site today.
