I've been using a Quickmill Alexia PID for about 6 months, along with a Macap M4 stepless grinder. Before that I had a Silvia, and various other grinders. I'm very happy with the Alexia. Once I dialed the pressure down to 9 bars and got my technique perfected, it's delivered very reliable espresso. After about a two minute warmup it's a very good steamer, but it is a little wet and of course the cycling between brewing and steaming really slows things down when you're making lattes for a crowd.

At the moment I have the opportunity to purchase a used Andreja for about $900. It's a couple years old, seems to be in good shape, and has the optional direct connect kit.

So, what do others think. Does the Andreja seem like a reasonable deal? I think I could probably tinker with it for a while and then sell either it or my Alexia. I think once I mastered the cooling flush (which seems trivial) I'd be pretty happy with the Andreja. I do like the idea of being able to instantly steam a little milk (even if it's only an once or two to add to an americano). Still I'd be giving up the pull-a-shot-anytime-I-damn-well-please convenience that I've had with Alexia.

Anyone who has spent time with both machines have thoughts/advice?

As a rule of thumb, a single boiler like the Alexia works nicely if you are espresso only at least 80% of the time. If you need to switch back-and-forth between brewing and steaming frequently, it gets old fast. I wouldn't recommend the Alexia if you entertain regularly, unless your friends happen to be diehard espresso fans. Depending on the condition of the Andreja, you may be able to resell it for about the same price as you paid six months from now since it already took the biggest hit on price. If you can spare the cash, I agree it would be fun to try them side-by-side and keep the one that works best for your situation.
