Tamper size for Elektra sixties

Postby Yeti on Thu Feb 03, 2011 1:42 pm

I'm, presently staying just around the corner from Reg Barber's shop and will be stopping in to pick-up a new tamper for my new-to-me Elektra A3. Problem is my machine is about 1000 miles east of me and I forgot to bring a basket along with me to size it.

Any Elektra Sixties owners out there know the correct size tamper base? (57.x, 58.0, or 58.x)?

Appreciate any help,

Dave

It takes a 58mm piston. If you want an ultra-tight fit, Reg would have to size it to your basket since they manufacturing tolerances aren't precise. Personally I like a little slack for nutation.

Thanks Dan, I saw 58mm was the size, but was wondering if 58.0 was too tight or not. I'm not looking for a super tight fit either, which was why I asked.

Sometimes 57.9 or 58.2 is a better fit for a particular companies '58mm' design as you likely already know.

I usually use ridgeless baskets, but 58.0 is not too tight in mine at all and you could get away with a bigger one if you wanted a really tight fit (but I like nutation and am not too picky about the exact size beyond "pretty good" which 58mm is).

Just to chime in late, I have "stock" 58mm tampers, and they work fine . . .

You may be staying just around the corner from Reg Barber's shop, but I said nothing about Reg Barber or his tampers . . .

Yikes...bad day?

I was trying to clarify your post as I wasn't sure what 'stock' tamper you were referring to as I was referring to RB tampers so assumed you were as well. And given that you didn't provide any actual measured dimensions, a 'stock' 58mm tamper from uncle Bubba's garage may actually be 57.5 or 58.9mm...

Not sure what's up lately, but some of your responses to peoples posts have been a little on the harsh side. Replies like these tend to make the forum unwelcome to newer members and generally serve no purpose.

Perhaps refrain from replying if you feel you need to talk down to folks?

Hope you have a better day today.
