As much as I love my Bumper knockbox that's an improvement. It has been a while since I've removed the bar on mine but it's a bit tedious IIRC.

CSME9 wrote:Thanks Paul.... can you provide (Tubbi) dimensions. I am in the market for a smaller knockbox thats a bit larger than the grindenstein & smaller than the 7x7 sizes.

WS

It's approx. 13cm high at the rear. 9.5cm high at the front. The bar is 11cm accross at the knocking area - i.e. the bit that is inside the tub. I made it so there is clearance for the pf ears.

Footprint is 10cm diam. but it flares up towards the top to around a 13cm diam.

I reckon it can hold about 15 double pucks.

I also have a Grindenstein but find it just a little on the small side to avoid a sprinkling of grinds around its edge, which is why I have been thinking of picking up one of the Cafelat ones for some time...

I also have a Grindenstein and find nothing bad to say about it. Looks good, Solid, "quiet", easy to clean,... but it is just a bit small.

My daily consumption is such that I have to empty it too often. What must be understood is that I do not toss the spend grounds in the garbage which would be easy enough. Instead I empty the knockbox outside in a compost pile. So not having to go there every 2-3 days would be nice.

I have been resisting the purchase of a Bumper/Cafelat "Classic" for a while to preserve the little counter space that I am allocated.

Since I am about to succumb to the urge to get a larger knockbox, may I ask the owners of Bumper/Cafelat "Classic" if there is a noise issue with that knockbox. I guess Paul, and the guys at Cafelat, are the only one that can say if the newer knockbox is quieter.

The knocking of the spend box is the single most noisy and disturbing part of my espresso making and I am trying to keep that noise down for obvious reasons.

Hey! I decided not to buy the best available grinder (for the money) just for the noise reason alone. It is that important for me. And yes, I am buying a hand grinder for these early morning and late night grind sessions.

Careful there!

My wife prefers the big grinders in the morning - they may make a bit more noise but they do it for a LOT LONGER (less than a couple of seconds on the Nino). She HATES the Lehnatrz hand grinder which cranks on for minutes.....

In other words, it's not just volume but also time in terms of what disturbs the rest of the family. Bear that in mind! :D

I considered it to a degree by a getting a Pe De that grinds a bit faster and a kneemill model where, I would assume, my legs will muffle some of the noise.

Thanks for the warning though. :D

Just got the "classic" Cafelat. Very happy with it. It's twice the price of the Grindenstein but it's more than twice as good. Easier to use and no spatter.....

Thanks Mike. Is there any significant metallic noise coming out of the box? That was my only concern really.

P.S: I missed out on the Pe De grinder because I wasn't around at the end of the auction... Darn these last minute bidders. :?

Hi Sylvain. The longer bar and thick padding actually makes it slightly quieter than the Grindenstein and the puck falling makes pretty much no noise at all.

The Cafelat is also much easier to use (puck always falls straight past bar and in without having to do anything special, rather than getting stuck as it does on the Grindenstein).

The splash guard at the back works perfectly.

I used to have to empty my Grindenstein at least once a day, this every couple of days.

And the stainless looks nice too. Very well made. No seams.

The Cafelat a very good design well made.

Cheers

Thanks again.

I'll order one tonight. The Stainless steel and black fits my setup perfectly. It has been in my wish list for a long time...

I use the Knockout Box from CC as I like to keep the knockbox in a drawer out of site unless needed. Why waste precious counter space with a knock box if you don't have too. Any standard size kitchen drawer can easily be adapted to hold one of these.

The stainless k/b tray gets emptied into a small compost bucket kept under the sink which I take out and empty on the compost pile every 3-4 days.

I stll like my old knockbox. The brushed stainless matches nicely with the Cimbali brushed stainless body.

If you've got a cupboard under the espresso machine you can pick up a drawer assy. with sliders at most home improvement stores. This can be mounted inside the cupboard door either on a shelf or hanging from the underside of the counter.

Hi Paul,

if you're still following this thread I'd be very grateful to know what's the smallest size of grouphead your Cafelat cleaning brush has been tested with successfully.

My regular machines (Elektra MCal, Olympia Cremina) both use 49mm baskets and I'd like to keep them cleaner both than their owner and than is easy to achieve with the Pallo brush I use at the moment.

Cheers

Mike

The only thing you really need to worry about with an in drawer knockbox, is moisture. Those hot and steamy pucks bleed off a lot of moisture. Enclose them in a small space and you get condensation inside the cabinet which could lead to mildew and mould in your coffee bar.

I guess if you leave the old pucks in there long enough mold will grow on the pucks but in two years of use I haven't seen any issues with the wood. Most drawers have plenty of air space over them so its not like they are fully enclosed plus it only takes me two days to fill the tray so it gets dumped regularly. After I dump the puck I rinse off the p/f & flush the screen before closing the drawer so any steam is long gone. Something to watch out for I guess but as I said it hasn't been an issue.

I only have to empty the big bumper box about once a week but I usually do it more often than that. I have had molded pucks at bottom before, which is why I empty it more often.

I am planning an espresso bar and have been thinking about whether to cut a hole in the countertop for a dedicated knockbox passthru to a trashcan, stay with a knockbox on the countertop, or use a drawer. If I don't empty the knockbox every other day, mold starts to grow. Bleech.

From my own experience...

For mold to grow there as to be mold to begin with. Thus, if your knockbox, drawer, house is not contaminated (yet) there will not be any mold growth. Even if you leave the spent ground seating for days.

Molds are very common and it is unlikely that anyone would go very long without seeing it appearing at some point. John, I guess, you either have been lucky or you are disciplined enough to maintain the sufficient level of cleanliness to keep the molds at bay.

Once molds have began colonising your knockbox, cleaning with dishwasher soap will not be sufficient to get rid of them. I found that a bleach bath did get rid of the molds in my knockbox. It would not be so easy for a whole drawer or kitchen cabinet.

I have no idea if these "coffee molds" are of any health concern? I have them growing in my knockbox, on-and-off, for a while and have not seen a difference in my overall health but that does mean anything.

One last detail; if you do not see molds it does not mean that there is none. It may just mean that they have not had the time to spread just yet.

Nothing authoritative here, just adding to the common reflection my 2 Canadian cents worth.
