Tall tamper for tall barista

Postby GewoW on Wed Nov 18, 2009 12:48 pm

Hey all,

I bought a cafelat tamper, and although it's great, it's way too short for me... So I ask you all, is there any one that knows of a tamper that is at least >4 inches in height, and can direct me to it. I am 6'7'' and getting a tamper that fits nicely is probably going to be a challenge, so any help is appreciated.

*Edit* I saw the Reg Barber radical pro and I'm not a fan of the design. I would like to be able and apply pressure on the top of the tamper.

Thanks

Since you are a Canadian, I have heard that Reg will fulfill special orders from time to time. You might ask him. If not there are a few folks on H-B that do custom tampers from time to time. Les at Thor tampers will do all wood tampers to order.

The Reg is quite expensive. I don't really mind this, but I don't want to spend on something I'm not sure will work, and I'm sure that the custom work will be extra.

Also, Thor tampers are, I believe and correct me if I'm wrong, rather light. I'd like something heavy.

I stumbled upon this: http://www.coffeecomplements.com/produc ... oduct_id=1. he is an eBay seller under the name of precisiontampermaker and has gotten great reviews for his other tampers...It's also pretty cheap. The only issue is that it has that ridge (for leveled tamping), but I'm wondering if it is large enough (0.5 inches) for tamping for an Elektra A3, given that it has a rather low dispersion screen.

Any input would be appreciated, and thank you for the suggestions, Richard.

Les from Thor can build in a bismuth core to make it heavy.

What about using a butcher's block cutting board to raise your working surface by 2-3"?

The precision tamper maker will do one custom for you. He made one for the Caravel for me, and it is nice. I am sure he could make one longer if you ask.

Did you have to send him any drawing, or did you just ask him to make a longer version of an existing model?

I did not need a longer one, just one sized for the Caravel. You could ask him how long the handles are on his standard model, then see if he can lengthen one.

I can attest to precisontampers' quality. I got a short one from him and love it. It has a very heavy stainless base.
