Convex may offer a slight advantage with updosed shots getting close to a convex screen on fussy machines.

Other than the Radical Pro way back in the Tamper Roadshow, have never found face shape to make any consistently repeatable difference on e61s. The Radical Pro has a long handle which made rim gauging a tad dicey.

Save your tamper money and put it towards a better grinder.

^This. Instead of saving up for a tamper, I'm saving up for a grinder right now. The Hario mini mill is super annoying to dial in and super inconsistent even with the mod. Buy one of those generic tampers instead for less than $30 or keep the one you have right now.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I do have a "grinder upgrade" fund. And all your input has inspired me to contribute to it even more ferociously.

I replaced the base of the tamper, and went from curved to flat. The guy I got the tamper/base is on ebay, precisiontampermaker. He's got the serrated as well as the curved. But then I've only got one tamper with two bases whereas other folks have a very nice collection. :D
