Aha. Well that sucks. Ze Germans at kaffeenetz are also pretty enthusiastic about it.

Well as much as I wanted the Vario, I couldn't sell my wife on it, so I bought a Preciso instead. From the reviews that I have read, its grinding capability is if not equal to the Vario, very close, just without the electonic timer features. I'll just need to weight my beans. Any suggestions for a scale?

Recommended inexpensive scale for weighing coffee?

Some swear by the $10 specials. For me, they had enough drawbacks that I bought a more expensive unit.
