Recommendations for portafilters for La Valentina

Postby beygel on Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:10 pm

Looking for advice on specific portafilters for a La Valentina. I am still using the one that came with the machine, and it's time to experiment. (I am particularly interested in bottomless ones, because I've never used one before.)

Thank you!

Voila, my weapon of choice, the Verna original:

Thanks, Dan!

Do both Rancilio portafilters fit (so the only difference is the handle)? Do you know how these compare to the ones sold by 1st-line (which are first cut and then chrome plated)?

Thanks again,
Alina

The Rancilio commercial portafilter old/new style will fit, as will just about any 58mm portafilter listing "E61" among its compatibility list. I prefer the Rancilio because of its solid heft, but the OEM bottomless portafilters are nice too because there's no brass exposed.

PS: The La Marzocco portafilter fits, but will lock in at 7 o'clock instead of 6 o'clock. If that really bothers you, replace the grouphead gasket with one 0.5mm thinner or file down the portafilter's ears.

Thanks for clarifying, and for a great article on naked extraction!
