Rancilio Rocky or better grinder for budget around $350?

Postby grant862 on Sun Aug 21, 2011 12:18 am

Just got rid of the ppf in my Saeco Sirena and bought a Hario Mini Mill hand grinder (to see if I even appreciate the difference btwn ppf and non ppf). After a few months of hand cranking, I want to get a grinder. I switch between french press/drip/espresso so I do not want a stepless grinder. I do not want to spend over $400 (say for a Vario) but I am willing to spend up to $350ish. The rocky seems to fit the bill.

My main question is...does anyone have an idea on whether a new version of the rocky is due to be released anytime soon? (or even a guess?). If it is, I can wait a little while, otherwise I am going to pull the trigger on the rocky.

Also, any suggestions on other grinders in my price range that you would recommend. I plan on eventually getting a better espresso machine in a few years, but nothing more than a Silvia or around there, and I plan on keeping the grinder and Silvia (or similar machine) for at least 10 years (long term) before buying new gear.

Thanks

If you're willing to spend up to $350, I'd buy a refurbed Vario at that price. The duration of warranty from Baratza is shorter, but the grinder is a fantastic performer for the price, and their customer service is extremely well regarded.

For overall purchases, you could do worse than to read the HB guide to choosing gear at the "right" price. To distill the FAQ, cheaper gear is less forgiving and has a lower performance ceiling. Pricier gear buys you the ability to taste a better shot with more regularity.
Your dog wants espresso.

After I posted this, I searched for that and realized the price (when it is available) is about $360. I think it is a no brainer to go with that over the Rocky...but it is just a waiting game for it to become available on Baratza's website.
