I'm looking to buy a Super Jolly and have a choice between a version with the doser and the one with a chute (http://www.mazzer.com/scheda.asp?idprod=10). The latter, admittedly, looks odd as it is for the grocery market, but it seems like a nice idea given that I don't really want a doser as I don't grind that much and don't need to store ground coffee for dosing. Will this chute version work well for filling a portafilter? Are there static issues with it? Anyone tried this?
That model CAN be be used for grinding right into the PF.. But it is BEST used, to grind into a bag, or brewer basket, something like that.
Have you seen the "Mazzer-E" models? Doserless, specifically designed for espresso use. Of course, the only model not available in this configuration, from the manufacturer, is the Super Jolly, but Here is what it looks like.
You can do the modification yourself, you just wont have the electronic controls that those models have. Meaning, you would remove the doser, and buy the Small Funnel, OR, the Large Funnel(your choice), as well as the Backing Plate, Static Screen, and possibly the Gasket.
This would give you the same operation, without the electronic dosing features. You would still manually turn on and turn off, the grinder once it has dosed the proper amount.
Now, as far as I know, with the exception of the Mini, the Doser is the same exact size, on all the grinders. So, the backing plate "for" the major, should fit on any of the models, except the mini. The small funnel, is the one which comes on the "Mini-E", and the Large funnel is the one which comes on the "Major/Robur/Kony-E". It's just a size issue... If you use the small funnel, you'll just hold the PF up higher then if you used the large funnel.
Now, as far as dosers are concerned, NO ONE who enjoys real espresso, made with fresh roasted/fresh ground coffee(which is everyone here), ever fills up the doser with any amount of coffee. Many people use doser grinders. All you do, is turn on the grinder, and thwack the doser handle, dosing coffee into the PF, and turn off the grinder once you have dosed enough. Filling up a doser with coffee, and pulling the handle "once for a single" or, "twice for a double", is how they do it in Italy, and how cafe's in America do it, that have no clue. Fresh coffee stales VERY quickly, being completely unusable in 15minutes. You ONLY grind what you need, SECONDS before you use it, and this can be done with a doser grinder, AND with a doserless grinder. Its more a choice of what YOU want. Doing a quick search on "Doser vs.Doserless" will give you an idea of the size of the never ending debate over, "which is better".
Here is a video demonstrating how a doser is used to grind per shot...
Thank you, JmanEspresso! I'm in a situation where I can pick up the "grocery" model at a favorable price. Your discussion suggests that if I'm not satisfied, I could do the same rebuild on that model Jolly, as I would on a doser version. I was just hoping to find out that it is not catastrophic to start with the grocery chute version, e.g., static, clumping or some other distraction that would make it impractical or diminish usefulness.

The SJ doser is 6.25" tall & the Major's is 7" tall. The Major backing plate is 3/4" too tall for an SJ so you need the one that comes with the shorter (Mini) funnel kit for an SJ. If you want to use the shorter funnel on a Major you will need to elonagate the funnel mounting holes so you can line up the opening in the funnel with the chute. I swapped the funnel kit conversion from my SJ to one of my Majors & covered the gap at the top of the backing plate with high temp metal tape. The funnel covers the tape so its never seen & the shorter funnel is not an issue on the Major.

I believe RapidCoffee uses a Major with the bag chute. You might want to PM him for his impressions if he doesn't see this thread.
