UPDATE:
Brand new black timered SJ arrived yesterday. (In Austin Powers voice: yeah baby...yeah)
From my O.P. my interpretation of the advertisements were correct. I called Chris (chriscoffee.com) and Jim (1st-line.com). Chris only has silver color and states next shipment from Mazzer will be in Fall 2010. Jim states their SJ description having the auto/off version was outdated. He has since correct his site's SJ description. Another forum member here informed me of his near-mint Black SJ (built after 2007). But I decided on 1st-line.com as price including shipping was just a little more, warranty (I realize that this thing will outlive me), and brand new burrs.
To answer my own question #3: first realize it was meant in part jest. I just started using a semi-auto two months ago. See my background Love Super Auto Espresso/Coffee Maker -- Need Help Buying PLEASE!!. I am very happy with my Espro tamper. Putting my existing 58mm Espro tamper in the SJ throat to prevent popcorning I made a slight scratch on the side on tamper. I like my things in mint condition so there's no way I will use any decent tamper for this function. So I will continue using POS plastic tamper that came with my Alexia. I still want a new tamper, though low priorty. My criteria is part eye-candy. Pullman's purple is not the right shade of purple (Northwestern University purple). Also pricing the barista version with engraving was >$200. Heck that almost 1/2 way to a new Vario
TASTE:
Lastly I unfortunately do not have enough identical double PF baskets to do blinded tests between DL Rocky (with WDT afterwards) vs. the doser SJ (I see no clumps so no WDT). From just past day of testing, I can clearly detect subtle differences between the grinders. (18 grams Intelligentsia Black Cat). I know my palate is nothing like those of senior HB member like Jim S. But I may not be able to detect taste difference. JimS (at lower doses) favored the Rocky vs. Robur Titan Grinder Project: Can it Beat the Mazzer Robur? I am very happy with the SJ. Dedicated grinders are the only way to go.
DOSERLESS:
Too much work to do this weekend. I'll keep the doser (nice not having to do WDT). I'll add the doser-sweeper mod when I can get out of house. If I can find quality looking doserless-mod with minimal retention then I'll do it. I've found some nice ones on this site already but still comparing.
Thanks for reading this verbose post (I can touch type decently and hence long posts).
