Looking for a pressure gauge

Postby Psyd on Thu Feb 18, 2010 12:20 am

That would, in the best of all possible worlds, be between two and three inches in diameter, have a 3/8ths fitting on the back, liquid filled, and read in Bar (or PSI and Bar) somewhere in 200-300 PSI or 15 to 20 Bar range. 3-2-3% accuracy or really close to that (or better), and ideally, it should also be able to withstand temps commensurate with an espresso pull.

I've found a couple that are really close, but none that encompass all of my blue sky dreams and wishes. Anyone have a source I should look at before I pull the trigger on one of the others?

I do not put much faith in this temperature "limitation" for the purposes of a PF pressure gage. There's one thing to have a gage tee'ed into a process line in which the normal fluid temperature exceeds the gage temp specs. In this case, one is continuously monitoring system pressure and the gage is also subjected to system temperature - sorta - because the gage is inherently a dead end. Then, there's "us" who measure pressure momentarily (relatively speaking). For sure, there are loads of quality gage manufacturers out there. Here is one that meets the temperature prerequisite, is oil-filled, and has very nice accuracy: http://www.gaugestore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=34013
I believe having 3/8" NPT male threads on a gage in this size range would be extremely rare.

Espressoparts has a nice collection of pressure gauges.

You should probably find what your looking for at omega, I used one rated at 150 and didn't have any problem with it.

I could easily come up with the 1/4" adaptation, but the one that you list makes me give up either the back mount, or the bar measurement. That one was already in contention (from another thread where you've mentioned them, thanks) but I'd like to get one that will face the user without contortions or a handful of Harry Homeowner looking elbows and such, and one that doesn't need the psi to bar conversion. I'd even be alright with psi and kPa. I might be hoping against hope here, but I figured if anyone knew...
The EPNW site features mostly dual gauges, and accuracy on those is decent, but...

(edit: ehm, when speaking with the technician, he suggested that they could get me the parts in 3/8", but it turns out that when they arrived, they were actually 1/4" NPT, so, 1/4" NPT is perfect!)

Well, here's one that I sell all the time: http://www.gaugestore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=38305 . It is 1/4" NPT back mount 2" gage, oil-filed, psi/bar readings, great accuracy, but has temperature "limitations" :) .

So, you're saying that if I'm using it just to measure the occasional brew pressure, those 'limitations' won't come into play? 'Kay, I'm convinced. It has everything else I'd want, so, do I write you a check, or do you prefer PayPal?

Actually, and unfortunately, you would be better off going direct. I TYPICALLY package these with other goodies as I hope you can imagine. Shipping is a "killer" but these guys are somewhat reasonable.

It's in the mail, thanks!

It works perfectly... See the thread under Tips and Tech
