How to choose used espresso equipment for starting a business

Postby gedit on Mon Nov 14, 2011 9:48 pm

Is there a similar thread to How to choose an espresso machine and grinder at the "right" price for used equipment for a starting business (well wannabe a starting one that is)?

I guess my question is what used equipment (both Espresso machine and a grinder) proved to be reliable enough over a few years of service that if I'm set out to buying it, I will have a decent use of it without spending too much time maintaining or fixing it?

I am thinking of operating a small Espresso bar within an existing business and I am looking to buy a 2 group machine with 2 good grinders. Any recommendations?
I've tried to look for similar posts and didn't come up with much. I would appreciate ranking of such equipment too.

My next question will be working with the favorite roaster. I would probably need recommendations. Appreciate your insight.

A better place for finding people with experience with used equipment in a retail environment would be: http://www.baristaexchange.com.

My recommendation after 15 years of operating an espresso bar, several carts and an espresso bar is that if you are not adept at machine diagnosis and repair you not purchase a used machine that you are not able to observe operating. The exception would be if someone or a business is offering some guarantee so if the machine has a catastrophic failure in the first few weeks you can get your money returned. Good luck.
