Digital Scale in Vancouver BC

Postby UKGuru on Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:34 pm

Hi,

I am trying my best to improve my espresso shots with my Mazzer Mini and Rocket. However, depending on the espresso beans I am using, they recommend a certain dosage. So my solution is to get a decent scale, but in Vancouver this has been a challenge.

I am looking for the Jennings CJ600... Can anyone recommend where to purchase this scale or one that is of similar quality that provides a precision of 0.1g?

Any help would be great.

Best

quick Google of 'Jennings C600' gives this as one of the top results:

You can buy a 0.1g accuracy grinder on eBay for less than $12 USD. They won't have a platform as large as the scale you cited, but that doesn't matter if you're weighing the coffee in the basket or single dosing. See Recommended inexpensive scale for weighing coffee? and search on 'digital scale' for previous discussions.

Can't believe I paid more than 400$ for mine! And I'm pretty sure it is not that accurate!

I bought a Jennings 600 and used it for a while until it just stopped working.

It is a very frustrating scale to use because of the auto shut-off that is very quick. I had to empty the basket and re-tare because it would shut-off on me all the time. Expensive and not that precise!!

When it died I communicated with Jennings for the warranty but the cost of shipping associated with the risk of them not actually covering the failure was too much for me.

I ordered a 0.01 gram scale from Flea-bay for $9.98 shipped from Hong Kong. I have a few calibration weigh and the scale is precise within 0.02g throughout the 300 grams range. Tough to beat the value of that one! http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-300g-x-0-01g-Min...27b9a8d8b1

It has been used and abused (dropped on the floor numerous time!!) for over a year and it still works like new. It also has an auto shut-off but it has a reasonable lag!

Disclaimer I have no association with the seller or manufacturer of that scale. I am just a happy customer that wants to share the good news.

Try the Gourmet Warehouse on Hastings near Clarke Dr. I picked up a small Escali scale there for under $30.

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a Jennings CJ600 based upon reviews I read on this and other websites. It really was difficult trying to locate one, but I did find an etailer that strictly sells scales in Canada. I will probably wait a little for the delivery, but I will post my opinions for using the scale for weighing the coffee before pulling the shots.

I did try going to the local gourmet kitchen stores in Vancouver, but I could not find anything that had a 0.1 graduation, which is key for me anyway when it comes to weighing my beans.

I will be trying JJ Beans and Fernways 1939 this week...

Thanks to everyone for their posts...

Do yourself a favour and order one of these scales. I've tried a few 0.1g scales, both branded (e.g. Escali) and HK specials. The Triton is by far the best mini scale I've used so far. Much faster settling, no drift, excellent repeatability. I bought a second as backup from the seller I linked because I liked it so much.

A bit old but if you want a decent selection of scales locally then check out any of the dodgy looking head shops on Granville. "Hi, I'm looking for a scale accurate to 0.1g for measuring coffee grinds". "Sure buddy, whatever you say".
