It is time for a new travel machine. My Baby Gaggia from 1991 is really going.
I am looking at the Crossland CC1 and the Ascaso Steel Uno PID machine.
Any thoughts?

If I was in the market for a travel machine, I'd give a serious look at the Rossa PG. http://www.portaspresso.com/page1001.html. You did not mention the grinder, so I must presume that you have one. At Portaspresso, they also make two excellent grinders, but personally, I'd stay with the Pharos, modify or not.

I should clarify my travel will be by car, so I can tote along a reasonably sized machine. I do have a Pharos and will use that with the machine. My Baby Gaggia is about the right size; similar to a Rancilio Silvia and I'm pretty sure the two machines I am considering.

For having seen the CC1 in person, it is slightly bigger than the Gaggia classic (which I believe is the same size as the Baby). It is also heavier.

Mini Gaggia or any other 110v, small spring lever is the way to go:

If you are steaming milk as well then a La Pavoni is the way to go, if u can keep fresh beans on hand then a hand grinder.
