Confusing purchase for home roaster - how to justify the cost? - Page 3

There are a few ways to 'test' home roasting without making a big investment.

If you've got a stovetop popcorn popper (the classic WhirlyPop is considered the best for roasting) you can use that. There will be smoke and chaff but you should be able to get away with it once. Dump a couple of cups of greens in the popper, put it over medium heat and start cranking.

Something you can do in the fireplace so the chimney handles the smoke (you're still on your own for the chaff) is Heat Gun / Dog Bowl (HG/DB). Get a steel dog bowl and a heat gun. Put a couple of cups of greens in the bowl and fire up the heat gun. Stir with a spoon and move the heat gun around (plus in and out) to control the heat. You don't want too much heat or you'll scorch the beans (this also applies to using the popcorn popper).

For both you'll need a way to cool the beans. A large wire-mesh strainer over a running fan works well but do be aware that there will be chaff - probably lots of it.

Then, once you see just how good fresh-roast can be you can start shopping for your first 'real' roaster. ;)
