Cappuccino cups (5oz)

Postby mr_bean on Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:18 am

Hi everyone,

I just moved in from overseas where I had joined a similar forum called kaffee-netz. Fortunately, there are also lots of enthusiasts on this continent - you!

I have huge trouble finding actual cappuccino cups. Apparently the awful Starbucks "Venti"-culture totally destroyed the perception of what a real cappuccino is. A serving should be 5-6 oz, which I believe is a fact, not a preference.

However, I did not find 5 or 6 oz cups - neither in local stores nor on Amazon. A site called visionespresso lists appropriate cups, which are out of stock...

Where do you buy cups? Is there no alternative to importing from Europe?

With the disclosure that they're a sponsor, my go-to vendor for cappuccino cups is Great Infusions. My personal favorite is the ACF Nero Macchiato (approx. 3 ounces). They also sell 5 ounce competition cups from ACF.

My daily-use cappuccino cup is the Intelligentsia Competition Cappuccino Cup. It's right about 5 oz., is very well made, and has a great shape and feel.

Nuova Pointe used to be my go-to cup, but, from what I understand, their production shifted continents and the overall quality dipped to the point where many vendors stopped carrying them. If you can find old stock, they have a great feel (though the glaze usually has a little defect or two on each cup). Failing that, for "classic" cups, the ACF line is very nice.

Oh man, this is an easy one. The raven cup from Orphan Espresso, http://orphanespresso.com, is my wife's go to cup for capps. 5 oz porcelain, made by Inker in Croatia. Pictured is the espresso, dusted with steamed half and half.

I've been using these cups for almost a year now and they get a ton of use. I probably make 5 cappas a day and then on the weekends with guests always dropping in I'll double that if not triple. My only complaint is I have only 4!!

The Orphan cups are on my Christmas list since I bought Inker espresso cups from Orphan and those have been my go-to's ever since!
