Can I make a Compak K10 work with only 18 inches of clearance?

Postby AndyinTexas on Sat Dec 11, 2010 12:11 pm

Finally decided to upgrade to a K10 to bring out the best in my LM GS/3, but in my new home I have only 18 inches of vertical counterspace. Chris coffee says the mini-hopper takes the height down from 25" to 20". Anyone have luck sawing down a mini- or other hopper (or doing something else beyond single dosing without using a hopper at all) and actually using a K10 to good effect with just 18" with which to work?

Thanks.

Without the hopper it's 15.75" to the top of the grinder so you won't have much room to work under your cabinet even if you single dose. I single dose w/ a spice jar in the throat to weigh down the beans. My set up wouldn't fit under your cabinet so you may want to think about a different location if you hope to use a hopper.

I'd like to add.. whatever trouble you DO have to go through to make it work.. it will be worth it!

Thanks for the thoughts. One further question. Is the mini-hopper both easily removable AND does it have (as I believe most hoppers have) a retractable plastic "tab" at the bottom of the mini-hopper that allows you to keep beans in the hopper when removed from the base of the grinder.

The reason I ask is that it seems to me that if that were the case, I would be able to switch seamlessly between single dosing and using the mini hopper when I had company - in each case moving the base out from under the top cabinets to the front part of the counter top. It would also give me the option (preferred by Mrs. AndyinTexas) of keeping nearby, but not attached to the base of the grinder, a small amount of beans stored in the mini-hopper, and just bringing out the mini-hopper and pulling the base of the grinder to the front of the counter from under the top cabinets each morning when pulling shots.

Thanks again.

The hopper does have the sliding tab & it lifts out easily.
