Buying advice on used Izzo Alex Duetto

Postby Nathan on Sat May 07, 2011 7:16 am

Hi home-barista,

I'm looking for an used Izzo Alex Duetto to replace my Gaggia Classic. Are there any specific things to look out for on buying an used dual boiler (or more specific the Izzo Alex Duetto)?

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

Good luck with that! I think Alex Duetto II owners are too attached to their machines to offer it for resale. I'm planning on being buried with my Duetto.

Assuming the owner is willing, ask them to pull some espressos and make a couple cappuccinos. That will give you peace of mind that it works as promised before money exchanges hands. Scale buildup is the #1 killer of espresso machines; the thread Checking an E61 Espresso Machine for Scale describes a fairly unobtrusive way of confirming the machine has been properly maintained. If the E61 mushroom is caked with scale, a full professional descaling will cost a few hundred (guessing).

I would also ask the owner about his usage habits like how many and what types of drinks he makes per day or week. Along with that you can ask the owner his cleaning habits (how often he backflushes, descales etc).

I would ask to checkout the inner working for any leaks while the machine is on. Look for water residue/scale drips and under the machine to see if any water is leaking through to the bottom.

This in addition to what others have said.
