Budget about $1000 - super-automatic espresso machine or other?

Postby Lizard on Thu Jan 13, 2011 10:10 pm

I know I'm out of my league when it comes to espresso machines and such so please bear with that. We are looking for a fully automatic espresso machine for small cups of strong coffee machine.
The process I use to brew a decent espresso/strong coffee takes about 10 minutes with my second hand POS Mr. Coffee machine.

We are looking to spend about 1000 on one. In particular, we are considering the Solis Master 5000 machine.
So that is option 1, push button, grind, brew, done.

I guess another option would be one step less, auto grind, manual pack.

Really would appreciate some guidance on a machine that you own(ed).
Thanks in advance for your input.

I should also note, that frothing the milk option is of no importance.

I don't want to come off as a snob, but I doubt no one here is going to recommend a super auto. My recommendation? Save roughly $750 and buy a nespresso machine with pods. At worst, it tastes better, is easier to clean and quicker to function. Most people here prefer hands-on preparation.

No problem, I'd like to hear the opinions. I have no problem not using a super auto. But I won't do is use pods or any prepackage coffees, tried that and it was horrible... I use 3 different beans I found are the best, now to get a decent machine that can complement these excellent beans.

I'll take any recommendations for a machine now that will give us a nice pull. thanks so much

In over a million travel miles, never had a shot from a super auto that was any better than a Nespresso. Most often much, much worse.

Nespresso makes many different 'blends'. For my 2d, Roma, pulled short, is the most palatable.

Do you want brewed coffee and espresso from the machine, or just espresso?

If you want espresso, I would suggest a machine such as a Gaggia Classic paired with a Baratza Vario grinder. That would make a great starter kit, and would be around your price point.

Thanks so much for the replys. Any thoughts on the silvano or the Anita by quickmill, basically want a machine to last, at least 10 years. Have a decent grinder at the moment.
I'll take another look at the gaggia, Looks like a decent spec. Just don't want to have a repair in a year or so.
I should note we're not interested in frothing milk just excellent espresso so no need for a dbl boiler.
Thanks
