Bezzera Medea E61 as first espresso machine/opinion?

Postby llamaegg on Sat Jun 25, 2011 12:15 pm

Hey guys/gals, hopefully someone will be able to shine some light on the machine in which finding any information on at all is ridiculously hard.

To give a little background, I'm looking to finally bite the bullet, so to speak, and buy my first espresso machine, and ended up deciding on a complete budget of $2,000CAD for both grinder and machine. That amount was originally quite a bit smaller when I was looking at the Silvia, but after mentioning my want to make a good amount of milk drinks I was told to look elsewhere

. I was lead towards an Baratza Vario for the grinder, as well as a couple people recommended that I waited a month or two on waiting for the Breville Dual Boiler that's coming out. Well, I was until I found out that the Breville is apparently rumored to not show up in Canada till next year. I don't mind waiting a month or two, but waiting for the rumored January, probably a month for reviews, then maybe another month of waiting and see if anyone has any short term problems with the machine, I could find myself waiting around 9 months before I end up buying a machine!

So after a bit of looking, I found myself eying both the Bezzera BZ07P as well as the BZ10P, being that both where in my price range, as well as both machine and company has had a fair amount of recommendations over the years. That's when I stumbled across the Medea, sure, it was at the high end of my price range, but it was running the E61 head, larger broiler as well as some extra features.

So of course, like any good shopper, I try and find any information on the Medea, and honestly, I can find nearly nothing. Heck, Bezzera's website doesn't even list it! It's like some mystery machine that belongs to some dark conspiracy or something!

Anyway, I'll stop writing now, before I've created a small novel for you guys to read!

The Bezzera Medea.
You are absolutely right: getting information on this specific model will give you a hard time. I believe it is only available for North American market (if not only canadian market!). But it is actually the same machine as the Giulia, Gea, Mitica, Magica, despite the cosmetic aspect.
For those models, you might be able to find information, specially from Australia, and in Netherlands where Bezzera is quite more active than it is here.
A nice machine however. I can't make any comparison with other E61, for this is my first one, but really, their is nothing I would have to complain about. It's fast, it's easy to use, and the coffee, as long as I can get proper beans, is simply perfect.

Our very own Jim Schulman refers to e61's as 'parts bin machines' Bezzera is a quality company with quality products, so since all the machine does is 'push hot water', go for it.
