Presently own a Barista (Solis) and ready to move up? What do you recommend it?

You can sometimes find used Mazzer Super Jolly grinders on eBay for under $350. They may need new burrs and some cleaning, but they're very solidly built and should last you a lifetime.

Also, you can buy a refurbed Baratza Vario for about $360. Ok, it's not a doser grinder and it's slightly over your price limit, but the Vario is a very good grinder for the price, and beats most doser or doserless grinders costing less than $800.

I agree with Beezer. A used Mazzer or similar from Craigslist/EBay will be the best value. Besides burrs it might need some aesthetic improvements, but paint and hands on work is less expensive than new. This will be the best value for the dollar.

Me three. I've been very happy with my used Super Jolly. I paid $350 to a failed coffee shop, although I did end up buying new burrs a month later (~$50).

I don't think used grinders are risky. Mazzers are built solidly, and I can't remember hearing about someone buying a dud. The FAQs page has a thread about what to look for in a used Mazzer. Also, you could search the "Buy, Sell, Trade" forum on CoffeeGeek. The quality of used grinders coming from enthusiasts may be higher.

+1 on the used Mazzer. It would be an excellent match for your Oscar.

I'll keep an eye open for one in my price range. They seem pretty expensive on ebay.

are all models and years of production equally good?

I think they are all pretty similar. Mostly aesthetic changes and other minor mods.

I'm currently bidding on the Super Jolly with the bid closing on Saturday. My max bid at the moment is $350. As a courtesy, I ask that you refrain from bidding unless you plan to pay more than $350 - no sense paying more than I have to. If you want it, let me know you're bidding and I won't raise my max bid any higher than it already is.

I'm looking at that one too but I'm ready to wait a few weeks to see if one doesn't pop locally.
