Baratza Preciso vs. Pasquini Lux vs. Cunill Tranquilo

Postby jericho78 on Tue Apr 05, 2011 11:40 pm

hello everyone,
i'm trying to compare the virtuoso preciso to others like the Pasquini Lux and cunill tranquilo.
i'm trying to find out what will last the longest, and be better overall. i've done hours of reading but cant come up with a definite answer or comparisons between a few of these.
i have a burr grinder for drip, but i just need a decent one for espresso.
thank you for all of your time,
mike

If I were making a fresh start I would go with the Preciso. I actually have a Lux and a Tranquilo.

I have a Vario, which I love. Mark Prince gave the Preciso a glowing review in which he said, "Honestly, if this grinder had digital timers and controls, I'd advise Baratza to just drop the Vario and keep this model. It is that good." That says an awful lot. It's not enough for me to dump my Vario and buy a Preciso, but if I were starting all over again, I might forego the Vario and get the Preciso.

I don't think you'll regret it. I owned a Virtuoso before I bought the Vario. Great grinder. The only thing missing was the adjustability that you now see in the Preciso.

Well, I've owned a Preciso for a little over a month now and have been very satisfied with the purchase. I switch between different brewing methods and have enjoyed the ease at which you can switch, I have noticed that going to espresso it seems I need to adjust the micro one or two after grinding for something else. However, it's normally the next day so it could just be the aging of the beans.

My only complaint is that I am not a big fan of the portafilter holder, it's messing and doesn't really shoot evenly in, but I think that is more just a grinder in general complaint as oppose to a specific knock to the Preciso. i.e. like complaining car oil is messy.

I have no problem recommending it.

Just as an FYI. I've tested the Vario with a La Spaziale Mini, and the la spaziale's portafilter spouts are way too massive to fit in the portaholder nicely. I now just use a bottomless la spaziale portafilter.

IDK what machine you have, so just FYI the fit in the portaholder are may be a bit tight (I think the dimensions would be about the same in the Preciso and Vario). Love the Vario and the Mini though.

Hey all, im new to Home-Barista so just wanted to give a quick shout and say thanks for such a wonderful forum!

As per the topic, I've had my Preciso about two months now, and I must say that I am very pleased with it. It grinds extremely consistently, and the micro adjustments are extremely helpful for dialing in a grind - much better then my gaggia MDF. Also, it grinds very quickly with little to no coffee left inside the grinder to become stale.

However, I do have a few gripes with it that might help your decision. When grinding directly into the portafilter with the portafilter holder insert, as has already been said, the grinds tend to disperse quite unevenly through the portafilter and actually clump up quite a bit. This can of course be fixed by applying the WDT distribution method, but if that has to be done then where is the time saved by grinding directly to the portafilter? To fix this though, I just grind into the plastic box that comes with it and shake it a little before dumping it into the portafilter, which really fixes the clumping problem.

Other than that, it works great! Very happy with it at the price point. Its very quiet, and also takes up a small footprint, and looks good next to most home machines. Hope this helps

Well assuming you are using a Classic like it says you own, the Preciso will easily fit your portafilter into the grinder, but I have been doing what the other poster mentioned too. (Just using the cup and pouring it in.)
