Anyone running the Ascaso i-Steel I-1 Doserless Flat Burr Grinder

Postby alex e on Mon Oct 25, 2010 7:12 pm

I'm choosing between the PL53 and a used Mazzer Mini, and noticed the Ascaso i-Steel I-1 Doserless Flat Burr Grinder today, and it is pretty dang nice lookin' with a choice of flat or conical burrs, I'm trying to sort out what would be a solid pick and last many years. The Macap 4 looks great but I want doserless.

Need some guidance here fellas.

The PL53 and Ascaso might be decent home grinders, but personally I'd be seriously looking elsewhere. The Mini/Macap will certainly last you a lifetime if you really want solid build quality as well as great grind quality. There is a doserless version of the Macap available. A quick search shows the MC4 as being one.

The Macap comes doserless as the MC4.

It's the same class as the Mini. As long as you're prepared to clear the chute, it's a darn fine grinder.
It's quiet and relatively quick, about 1g/s. I went back to it at home, jettisoning a far too noisy La Cimbali Max Hybrid.

For the same or less money, the Baratza Vario is reputedly a better grinder, albeit with less robust mechanics.

And to throw a wrench in the deal, I've found a local individual selling a Mazzer Super Jolly for $300. Pretty sure for $300 thats one to jump on. Run it without the hopper on it and mod it doserless, and voila! Done.

With [possibly] new burrs, you're done and dusted
